As fuel prices continue to escalate and an inflationary climate takes its grip, there appears to be no slowing of the revolutionary business model that has made Newberry Tanks & Equipment one of the country’s foremost fabricators of steel storage tanks for the petroleum and gas industry. Business is booming and the company remains a market leader in providing products and services to equipment installers, oil and fuel distributors, the lube oil market as well as the agricultural sector.
The storied firm was founded by Mr. James “Jimmy” Newberry in 1927 when he began peddling pumps, hoses, and tanks in the Mid-South. In 1951, he moved the company to its present location in West Memphis, Arkansas, and began fabricating steel tanks. Newberry Tanks & Equipment continues to win industry-wide awards for manufacturing excellence, continued growth and innovation, and first-class customer service.
In 1951, Jimmy Newberry also became a founding member of the Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI) a trade association whose 1,600-plus members in all 50 states and more than 80 countries manufacture, distribute, and service petroleum marketers and liquid handling equipment. These products are used in service stations, terminals, bulk plants, fuel, oil, and gasoline delivery, and similar petroleum marketing operations.
Upon Newberry’s retirement, his company was acquired by Hamilton Tanks of Columbus, Ohio, which continued to grow its reputation for providing quality products and services. In early 2011, it transitioned to its third ownership group, headed by former Company President, Chris Long. In 2012, Faith Tank became a part of Newberry Tanks & Equipment, bringing rectangular lube tanks and lube dispensing and oil recycling recovery systems to its catalog of storage tanks and equipment services.
Over the years, Newberry Tanks has worked with organizations such as the PEI, the STI (Steel Tank Institute), the SPFA (Steel Plate Fabricators Association), the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), and Underwriters Laboratories. The company has been instrumental in developing many of the products and standards serving the industry today.
For the past two-and-a-half years, Newberry Tanks has been led by Matt Kohnke, its current President, and Chief Operating Officer. He explains how the company’s entrepreneurial operating system gives its 68 employees control over operations and production. “It’s an approach that starts at the top and works its way through the organization.” he relays. “Folks in our production team are responsible for the manufacture of the tank from the very beginning until the time it’s ready to be painted.Our production welders are on a pay system which incentivises them to make as many tanks as possible without sacrificing quality. They work in individual work cells that are self-directed. And that’s how they earn their money.”
Kohnke maintains that the issue of quality is just as essential to the company’s modus operandi as its entrepreneurial approach to production. “There’s a high commitment within the organization to quality that can’t be sacrificed,” he states, “Any time we have a quality issue, the process owner drives down to the root cause through the “Five Whys” process, and identifies corrective actions which are communicated throughout the organization. We want to make sure everybody is aware of what happened and what we’ve done so that it doesn’t happen again.
Great for learning.”
James Fischer, Newberry’s VP of Sales since 2018, elaborates. “The organization is 100% geared to what we call 100% perfect order. That starts from the first conversations at the proposal stage, all the way through to the product’s arrival to the customer. That’s the commitment from every department in the organization – sales, production finishing.
Perfect order has seen the company’s orders and revenue rise substantially over the last several years — even through the two-year COVID-19 pandemic. “Our revenue in 2022 will be 250% higher than it was in 2018,” Fischer reports. “Back in 2019, we set a 10-year growth target and will likely achieve that in half of the time.”
Lately, the company has been busy expanding both of its operations- its main facility in West Memphis that manufactures cylindrical, or round, tanks for petroleum storage, and a smaller facility in Memphis, Tennessee, right across the Mississippi River which primarily manufactures rectangular tanks meant for lube storage and utilization.
“In 2021, we realized that our facility in Memphis for rectangular tanks was not large enough for the volume of business that we had and it certainly wasn’t going to handle any future growth in that business,” Kohnke relates.
“We bought an existing facility not too far from it that effectively doubled the amount of manufacturing space. Today, that facility is set up for an efficient flow of material from the time that the raw steel comes in, to the time that it’s put into production in welding cells, to the time that it makes its way onto a conveyor and flows into a brand new, state-of-the-art paint booth. So, that’s a significant process improvement in that facility. It also allows us to expand to meet our significant growth targets in the future.”
“From a people perspective, when we left our old Channel Ave location in Memphis, we had about seven employees working on the floor,” Kohnke adds. “Today we’re up to 12 and by the beginning of the first quarter of 2023, we should have 16 or 17 employees working on the floor, plus the corresponding support resources including engineering to production management.”
“We’re excited about the growth opportunities in West Memphis,” he continues. “A property became available adjacent to our factory shop, which we bought, and we’re in the process of readying that piece of land and building to move our maintenance department. Then we’ll take the existing space that we’ve used for maintenance and improve our paint capabilities for small tanks to provide a more consistent and quality finish. These projects are expected to be completed in 2023.
Newberry Tanks has always benefited from its proximity to Greater Memphis’ transportation links, including air, rail, barge, and trucking, which allow the company to get product out to its customers quickly and efficiently. The company is also centered in a large supply base, particularly for steel and the related accessories needed to provide turnkey packages- which include gauges, vents, pumps, hoses, etc. In addition, over the last several years, the steel industry, itself, has grown and flourished in northeast Arkansas, giving Newberry an even greater competitive advantage of being close to its basic raw material suppliers.
Newberry Tanks & Equipment success, Fischer points out, comes mainly from its commitment to customer satisfaction and the continuous process improvements that have allowed it to shatter the industry’s lead-time standards.
“Historically, the trend with tank manufacturers has been when somebody needs a tank, you get in line and wait-usually a 8, 10, 16, or 24-week lead time,” Fischer explains. “We’ve changed that. We’ll understand the customer’s need for the next full year, and we have a stocking program where, if they need X number of tanks per month or quarter, we will pre-manufacture those in advance and have them on our site so when they call us, we’ll have those tanks ready to be shipped, immediately. For those customers, it’s a tremendous advantage when they go to market.”
Also, Fischer reports that most tank manufacturers don’t keep an inventory of standard-size tanks for customers that can’t forecast their need. “Whether it’s a small standard tank or a 30,000-gallon tank, they manufacture those to order,” he says. “Essentially, that customer is going to have to get in line when that tank’s ready, versus us. We keep a large number of our standard sizes up to two or three thousand gallons on our two sites, ready to be painted and shipped, which takes that lead time down from eight weeks to two.”
“We’re not planning on slowing down,” says Kohnke in conclusion. “We’re going to continue to make sure we’re servicing our customers well. We don’t want to give them a reason to go somewhere else. If we provide a quality product, and if we can make sure our pricing is competitive, and continue to have some of the shortest lead times in the industry, we’re excited about what this business can be.”

FLO-FAST offers a great opportunity for a variety of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). If you are an OEM company that makes a recreational vehicle, boat, lawn mower or anything that runs on fuel – there is an opportunity for your company to sell a very high quality re-fueling system to your customers.
DEF consumption is directly related to fuel consumption. Manufacturers suggest a rate of around 2% to 3%, which roughly equals out to about 2 or 3 gallons for every 100 gallons of fuel used. The expert opinion is that performance comes down to factors such as road, route, and service.
Calculating DEF consumption allows you to maintain high fuel efficiency. It is important not to allow the a vehicle DEF tank to become completely empty. It should be refilled when 2-3 inches of DEF remains inside. It’s recommended that drivers refill DEF at least once in every third time they refill their tanks.
The DEF usage rate does rage slightly amongst engine manufacturers. While most engines will have an average dose rate of 2% of diesel fuel consumed, the dose rate may vary from 1% to 3%.
Most vehicle's tanks require one gallon of DEF for every 50 gallons of diesel fuel, and one gallon is expected to last between 300 to 500 miles.

Overall, DEF consumption is expected to be approximately 2% of fuel consumption, otherwise thought of as a 50 to 1 ratio, but overall it is depending on vehicle operation, duty cycle, geography, load ratings, etc. For every 50 gallons of diesel fuel burned, you will use 1 gallon of diesel exhaust fluid.

ISO 22241 compliant means the DEF transfer tank and equipment must be designed to keep diesel exhaust fluid pure and from preventing damage being caused to your engine.
ISO 2224 is a standard prepared by the Technical Committee ISO/TC 22 that often undertakes road vehicles, Subcommittee SC 5, Engine tests. This standard focuses mainly on the handling and storage of diesel exhaust fluid in a DEF storage or transfer system. The recommended standard explained in the ISO 22241 document is necessary to preserve the specified quality of diesel exhaust fluid from any point of production to the point where it is filled into the on-board tank of a vehicle.
The key advantage of owning a DEF transfer tank system means that it will keep the engines of your machinery in good working order. It is worth looking after your equipment and maintaining the recommended IS) 22241 compliance.
Section 4 of the standard states, "To avoid contamination of DEF and to resist corrosion of the devices used (containers, tubes, valves, fittings, gaskets, hoses, DEF fluid Dispenser, etc.), all materials in direct contact with DEF during handling, transportation and storage, including sampling, shall be compatible with diesel exhaust fluid". This means that all DEF transfer tank and equipment components should only be constructed from polyethylene or stainless steel.
]]>The price of steel is at levels not seen since 2008, just before the market crash. And according to MarketWatch, the peak is not yet in sight. As a manufacturer of steel tanks, this is unwelcome news to us, as we know it is to our customers.
We recently reached out to Sean McGahan at Shamrock Steel, an STI affiliate steel distributor who has worked in the business for two decades, to get a better understanding of why steel is spiking so dramatically.
The first thing he did was show us a letter he’d sent to his own client, explaining how his own company had been affected by the 96% increase in the cost of steel since June 2020.
McGahan explains, “One of the reasons for the spike is, of course, COVID. The uncertainty led to steel distributors letting their inventories get too low, and steel mills reducing their production in anticipation of slow sales.”
The fact that steel mills shuttered a full third of production from March to June of 2020 is well known. Manufacturers tried to protect their crews from COVID and shore up production as markets predicted an economic downturn. That created an immediate shortage.
But what’s less known is just how wrong that forecast turned out to be: as interest rates dropped to historic lows, new construction boomed. Business Insider summed it up: “The hottest pandemic purchase is a house, as more and more Americans take advantage of low mortgage rates to attain spacious backyards and more comfortable work-from-home locales.”
Another major contributing factor to the spike in steel prices was tariffs. McGahan continues, “The tariffs enabled steel manufacturers to raise their prices without fear of foreign competition, at least to a point.” The steel tariffs have helped U.S. steel mills compete domestically against foreign companies since 2018. However, they have simultaneously hurt manufacturers downstream of those tariffs. According to a recent study by Columbia University, about half the cost of the 25% tariff on foreign steel is passed along to domestic steel distributors, which gets passed along again to us, the steel tank manufacturers.
The combination has driven the price of steel “off the charts,” as McGahan describes it.
There is reason to hope that prices may peak or decline in the second half of 2021 due to new steel mills going online. However, putting a date on a calendar is — at best — imprecise: new infrastructure initiatives, combined with a still-booming real estate market means we may have to endure this situation a bit longer.
Equally, distributors worry about buying too much steel while the price is at an all-time high and getting stuck with the inventory, so the tug of war between supply and demand continues for all of us. As McGahan explains, “These rapid increases in steel pricing make it difficult for estimators to stay ahead of the curve, and they are frustrating to everyone except maybe the steel mills. In times like these I try to keep my customers informed as best I can, but it’s very hard when the increases come one after another.”

An air operated diaphragm pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses compressed air as a power source. The compressed air is shifted from one chamber to the other by a linked shaft that allows the chambers to move simultaneously. ]]>Poly tanks can handle extreme temperatures below zero. They show minimal distress in most air temperatures up to 120 degrees F. However, temperatures over 120 degrees F will begin to soften the tank walls and may compromise the integrity of the tank.
Rotationally molded poly tanks ranging from 6.5 to 12,500 gallon capacities. They can accomodate small fluid storage needs, to bulk fluids in a cylindrical vertical tank or square storage tanks. Typically, poly tanks are single walled, and offer many benefits in comparison to steel tanks. We'll discuss the benefits in another post, but overall, poly tanks often have a less expensive price tag and have a longer life expectancy. Depending upon the shape, the tank may offer additional benefits, such as being manufactured with extra strength corrugated tank walls, or may be configured into a stackable system that can store multiple fluids in a single footprint. Life Expectancy of Plastic Tanks:
There is not an overall proven way to determine the life span of a polyethylene tank. Many variables will effect a tank's lifespan, as the list below illustrates. It is wise to discuss your expectations and intended use with the tank manufacture, and ask any questions you believe may impact the service life of the tank.
We should also address the mobility of a tank upfront. Do you needs depend on a stationary fluid storage tank system, or is tank mobility an attractive fluid dispense feature? Mobile tanks can feature caster wheels or fork lift pockets, and in addition, dispense equipment is sometimes attached directly to the tank via steel brackets located on top of a tank. However, the more often a tank is moved around the shop, the more physical strain the tank is exposed to, from lifting, loading and from the physical movement of the tank.
Another factor that weighs on on a tank's overall life expectance are weather attributes. Is the tank being stored outdoors? Generally, tanks that are used outdoors in southern climates are subjected to more intense sunshine than they are in northern climates. Even though the polyethylene resins used in most roto-molded poly storage tanks have UV inhibitors in them, UV rays will still have a negative effect on the life span of any polyethylene tank.
Roto molded tanks have been on the market for quite some time, at least for nearly 40 years. We have gained a good general insight into what the average life span of a roto molded polyethylene tank will be. But due to many unknown factors to each environment and fluid application as outlined above, a tank's life span can vary. Many storage and dispense applications are very tank friendly, and therefore the tanks have an unusually long service life. Other applications can be very demanding, limiting the tanks to a short service life as a result. On rare occasion, we have seen tanks fail in less than two years and we have seen others well over 30 years.
Although a guarantee cannot be made on how long a polyethylene tank will actually last, we know from experience, that the average storage tank will last around 20 years, depending on some of the above factors.
General Tank Warranties:
Warranties on storage tanks will vary from manufacture to manufacturer. Each tank warranty can very from 3 years to a lifetime. It is best to consult each manufacture on what their warranty is and what it covers.
How Do You Determine If A Tank Is Still Safe For Use?
As a fluid storage tank is begins to show its age, you will be able to see fine fissures or hairline cracks. Inspect each tank for any cracks or wear marks. These fine cracks will become more intense and visible as time goes on and will become stress cracks. Dropping a light inside the tank can be helpful in visual examinations, because a stress crack will be easier to spot with an internal light source in place. A tank beyond its life expectancy will also sound dull when struck and could crack on impact as a result. Regular, annual documented tank inspections should be a normal part of your shop safety and maintenance program. When a tank is showing signs of wear or is otherwise determined to be unsafe, it is best to replace it.
Component failure can typically be traced back to improper lubrication. In fact, up to 80 percent of bearing failures can be caused by improper lubrication. Improper lubrication can happen from several areas during transfer, storage and dispense. Insufficient lubrication, using the wrong lubricants or contaminated lubricants, or mixing the wrong kinds of lubricants together, known as cross-contamination, are common problems. Mixing synthetic and mineral-based lubricants can even cause major problems that lead to leaks and complete failures. Oil contamination and cross-contamination typically occur during:
Proper oil storage, transfer and dispense are key to maintaining your oil supply's integrity. Bulk oil storage containers and dispense systems make it easier than ever to organize, store and dispense multiple types of fluids, oils and lubricants from the same station while preventing cross-contamination through systems with proper identification. Oil tanks should meet the ULC's regulations. The tank will bear a label stating its UL Listing. For example, the label on each stackable Tote-A-Lube tank from Fluidall states the tank is certified for "Nonmetallic Bulk Container for the Storage and Dispensing of Combustible and Non-combustible Liquids. ULC/ORD-C142.14-03." And the aboveground steel tanks, both the double walled tanks, from Roth or the steel bench tanks, from Newberry also bear the appropriate label. Additionally, oil storage tanks should have a dedicated space to properly identify the type of oil inside.
Oil storage tanks should either be made of steel or polyethylene. Poly tanks have many advantages over steel tanks. Some advantages polyethylene oil storage tanks have over steel include:
Visibility: Polyethylene tanks are translucent giving you visibility inside the tank, so you can check oil levels inside the container without exposing the interior to the open air.
Longevity/durability: Polyethylene oil storage containers are built for longevity and involve little to no maintenance. While steel is strong, polyethylene oil storage tanks have thicker sidewalls and are more flexible than steel.
Seamless: Welded seams give contaminants a place to hide over time and lend themselves to rusting when fittings are added by welding. Polyethylene oil tanks are seamless by nature and can be formed into stackable configurations with difference capacities and tank sizes.
Mobility: Polyethylene oil storage containers are lightweight and easy to move around if you need to reconfigure your oil storage space or lube room. Tanks can even be outfitted with steel cages for easy of mobility.
One of the most common oil storage containers are 55 gallon oil drums. Drums often come with issues that relate to oil cleanliness. Drums have been known to have waste at the bottom of them. Empty drums leave behind product residue that builds up over time. For this very common problem, polyethylene oil storage tanks offer a huge advantage when it comes to maintaining oil cleanliness levels and minimizing waste.
The EPA regulations on spill prevention, control and countermeasure (SPCC) state that fuel and storage tanks must have some type of secondary containment vessel. For single wall storage containers, this can be a concrete structure or an inexpensive poly vessel container.
Double-wall oil storage tanks use an inner layer and an outer layer as this secondary containment, providing an extra layer of safety and reliability. They offer the best of both worlds with an outer layer of fire-resistant, leak-proof galvanized steel and an inner layer of molded, high-density polyethylene, they are also available in double wall steel. Like most oil storage tanks, double wall tanks can be used as standalone storage system or a tank can be configured with dispense equipment for a complete oil storage and dispense system.

It's important to know your local state, county or city code requirements. They may require the double wall security, or you may be ok using single wall tanks.
Polyethylene portable oil storage tanks are ideal for mobile applications when you need to transport oil to remote service areas or to another area on your maintenance route within your plant. These resealable containers come in a wide range of sizes, from handheld to more than 400 gallons of storage space. Many portable oil storage containers are stackable and designed with forklift skids for loading and off-loading. ]]>Many people use the terms "waste oil" and "used oil" interchangeably. While both labels may identify the same fluid, from a regulatory standpoint there is a significant difference. Used oil is defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as follows:
"Used oil is any oil that has been refined from crude oil or any synthetic oil that has been used and as a result of such use is contaminated by physical or chemical impurities."
This applies to petroleum or synthetic-based oil that has been used previously. In contrast, waste oil has been contaminated and is deemed not usable.
Due to some of the additive chemistries, it is entirely possible that this mixture of finished lubricant and water would exceed the chemical limits and need to be classified as waste oil.
Oils that are off-specification typically contain arsenic (5 ppm), cadmium (2 ppm), chromium (10 ppm) and lead (100 ppm), as well as have a minimum flash point of 100 degrees F and total halogens of more than 4,000 ppm. This would qualify the mixture as hazardous waste.
Hazardous materials are defined in various ways under a number of regulatory programs, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), etc.
In addition to the EPA’s used oil management standards, you should consult with your local codes on what their requirements are for waste oil.
Hazardous waste disposal is a lengthy, costly and strict regulatory process. The only way to be sure your used oil does not become contaminated with hazardous waste is to store the used oil in a tank that is separate from all solvents and chemicals and do not mix it with anything.
The easiest way to ensure that you are in compliance and can avoid these fees and headaches is to label containers correctly. Unless it is truly waste oil, it should be labeled as "used oil."
Also, be sure to keep proper records. The EPA uses 12-digit identification (ID) numbers to track used oil. Transporters hauling used oil must have a valid EPA ID number, and generators, collection centers and aggregation points must use transporters with EPA ID numbers for shipping used oil offsite. Used oil transporters, processors, marketers and burners are required to keep records of each used oil shipment accepted for transport. These records for shipment must include:
These records are required to be kept for at least three years. It is recommended that you maintain these same records for the same period. As the ISO 55001 certification becomes more prevalent, this recordkeeping will be a positive step toward certification.
It should be noted that any used oil shipments less than 55 gallons do not need an EPA tracking number. However, special permitting may be required by state and local governments.
The basement of a home is the place of choice for most aboveground oil tanks. Because it is not exposed to the outdoor elements and temperature swings this will lower your risk of water in your tank.
Putting a tank in a garage or outdoors leaves it vulnerable to exterior damage from activity or consistent temperature fluctuations. And installing oil tanks in your garage will more than likely be a little more expensive as in most cases, you are required to install anti-impact vertical piping or fixed pylon.
No matter where you tank is installed it should be in a location where you can visually inspect the tank.

]]>Bulk oil storage and other fluids can easily be stored in stackable tanks or mobile tanks with casters, and with or without pump equipment. Depending on volume, bulk purchasing can cut the price you pay for fluids by as much as 50 percent.
If you purchase your fluids in bulk quantities, you have the option to add a bulk oil system to that to cut labor costs as well. These larger quantities of fluids eliminate continuous removal and replacement of empty drums, and there's no need to coordinate empty barrel storage, pick-ups or deposit-fee reimbursements. With bulk storage, time once spent on those chores can go to billable service work. As an example, if you go through four drums a month and each drum can take 30 minutes of labor at $15 an hour, you save $360 a year by eliminating handling. Add to that the cost of drum disposal, say $25 each, then you save $1,560 annually if you can eliminate four drums each month.
Waste reductions can also provide savings month after month. For example, eliminate the drum bottom waste of 3 inches (approximately 45 lbs.), costing 50 cents a pound in four drums a month and you save $1,080 a year.
